Browse All ProductsThe DR Ring Sectional Matrix System is a two-piece ring set designed for Class II composite restorations, supplied as one premolar ring and one molar ring. The premolar ring features shorter tines suited to the smaller, shorter teeth in the premolar region, while the molar ring features longer tines designed to reach and stabilize matrices on taller molar teeth. A key design feature is the ability to stack the molar ring over the premolar ring, which allows the combined rings to provide greater separation force or to address multi-surface restorations where additional force is needed.
Clinical Confidence
A ring's tine length determines how far the ring's gripping points extend into the interproximal embrasure. If tines are too long for a premolar, the ring seats too deeply and may cause unnecessary tissue trauma or unstable seating. If tines are too short for a molar, the ring does not reach the contact area effectively and the matrix is not held with adequate force. The DR Ring addresses this by providing two distinct tine lengths — shorter for premolars, longer for molars — matched to the typical anatomy of each tooth type.
The stackable feature extends the system's capability. Placing the molar ring over the premolar ring increases the total separation force applied to the matrix, which is useful in cases where the interproximal contact is tight or when the matrix must be held firmly across a multi-surface preparation. This stacking design means the two rings together can address a wider range of clinical situations than either ring alone.
Clinical Quality
Shorter tines are designed for the smaller embrasure and lower height of premolar teeth, providing stable matrix retention without over-seating.
Longer tines reach into the deeper interproximal embrasure of taller molar teeth for effective matrix stabilization.
The molar ring can stack over the premolar ring to increase separation force or manage multi-surface restorations.
Engineering
Shorter tines on the premolar ring and longer tines on the molar ring are matched to the anatomic depth of the interproximal embrasure for each tooth type.
The molar ring is designed to seat over the premolar ring, allowing stacking when increased separation force or multi-surface restoration support is needed.
The premolar ring's shorter tines limit over-seating in the shallower premolar embrasure, supporting stable and accurate matrix retention.
The molar ring's longer tines extend adequately into the molar embrasure, stabilizing the sectional matrix across the full height of the molar contact area.
The pair of rings covers both the premolar and molar tooth types in a single 2-piece purchase, avoiding the need to source rings separately.
Professional Use Cases
The premolar ring stabilizes sectional matrices on MO and DO premolar preparations, using shorter tines matched to premolar embrasure dimensions.
The molar ring holds sectional matrices on MOD, MO, and DO molar preparations, with longer tines providing reach into the wider molar embrasure.
Stacking the molar ring over the premolar ring increases the total force applied to the matrix when greater separation or retention is needed.
Why Choose
Chairside Reference
| Clinical Situation | Recommended Action |
|---|---|
| Premolar vs molar ring selection | Use the premolar ring for premolar Class II restorations. Use the molar ring for molar cases. When the contact is exceptionally tight or the case is multi-surface, stack the molar ring over the premolar ring. |
| When to stack | Stack both rings when the interproximal contact requires greater separation force to hold the matrix securely during composite placement and polymerization. |

Clinical Workflow
Select the premolar ring for premolar preparations and the molar ring for molar preparations. If unsure, trial the ring placement dry before loading the matrix.
Place the sectional matrix and interdental wedge before seating the ring. The wedge stabilizes the matrix at the gingival margin, and the ring holds the matrix against the tooth at the contact area.
Seat the ring tines into the interproximal embrasures on the mesial and distal aspects of the tooth being restored. Confirm the ring is stable before beginning composite placement.
After composite polymerization, remove the ring before the matrix. Removing the matrix first while the ring is still in place risks fracturing the newly placed proximal margin.
Inspect ring tines for deformation after each use. Bent or spread tines reduce the ring's retention force against the matrix and may result in matrix displacement during composite placement. Replace rings when tine deformation is noted. Do not attempt to re-bend metal ring tines as this can cause fracture at the tine base.
